NCHS drive-by flu-shots Saturday

Northern Cochise Health System is hosting a "Drive By Flu Shot Clinic" on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m.- noon, or the first 100 community members to arrive.

"Drive Through" route will begin on the corner of Rex Allen Drive and Bowie Ave. through the Hospital parking lot where all participants will receive their shot under the portico at the main entrance, then exit on Arizona Ave.

Each shot will cost $10, cash only, please.


Health Dept. flu-shot clinic Thursday

The Cochise County Health Department is committed to providing flu vaccinations to county residents on a first- come, first-served basis; no appointment will be necessary.

The Willcox flu-shot clinic will be on Thursday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 450 S. Haskell Ave. Children's flu shots will be given during normal weekday vaccination hours, not during the special flu shot clinic. Pneumonia shots are not being offered during theclinic.

AHCCCS, TriCare, and Medicare cards will be accepted. If you cannot pay the $25 fee for the shot we will help you anyway. Flu Shot Hotline is520-432-9409 or log on to cochise.az.gov.

Methodist holiday bazaar today

Unique handcrafted items and delicious baked goods are just waiting for your perusal at the Holiday Joys Bazaar today, Wednesday, at Willcox United Methodist Church, 124 S. Curtis, at the corner of Curtis and Maley in Willcox.

Featured this year is a Victorian dollhouse. Tickets for the lighted and fully furnished house are available at the Bazaar for $5 each or 6 for $25.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a cost of $5. Our main dishes of chicken and dumplings or chili and corn bread are accompanied by cole slaw, dessert and a beverage. Take-out dishes are available.

NCHS board meeting changed

Northern Cochise Health System's scheduled board meeting for Nov. 26, 2008 has been rescheduled for Nov. 19, 2008 at 5 p.m. in the Hospital's West Wing.

Commodities to be given out Nov. 26

USDA Commodities will be given out Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church patio, corner of Curtis and Maley. Please bring your I.D.

Hospice fundraiser dance Saturday

The Charles Wm Leighton Jr. Hospice Fundraiser Dance will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Elks Lodge in Willcox from 8 p.m. to midnight. Music provided by "Backwoods Boogie Band".

Tickets are $10 and available at hospice office, 524 W. Maley Place or at the door. Call 520-384-5878 for more information.

All are invited to have fun and support this worthwhile organization.

Fine arts show set for Apple Festival

'The Art League of Willcox is organizing a Fine Arts Show in connection with the 2008 Apple Festival. A best of show award of $25 will be presented to a single outstanding work of art.

All entries must be delivered to the Willcox Community Center on Wednesday, Dec. 3 between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Entry fee is $5 per item with a three-item limit. Entrants may also price their works for sale and no commission will be taken.

The show will accept entries in five categories: two dimensional art (paintings, pastels, drawings), three dimensional art (carvings, sculptures, fabrics, or textiles), photography (color and black and white), apple subject (any media) or Christmas Holiday subject (any media).

Help for parents of disabled children

Pilot Parents of Southern Arizona, a parent training and information center partner for families that have children with disabilities, will be providing two free workshops in your area on Tuesday, Nov. 25.

The morning workshop, starting at 10 a.m., will provide families with information on the Federal law IDEA 2004. What is it? How does it affect your child's education? The process of the law for services for special education will be shared and parent rights reviewed.

The afternoon session, beginning at 1 p.m., will be on Understanding Your Child's Test Scores. What do all those numbers mean?

The outcome of this session is for a better understanding of the information provided to parents after their child has been evaluated. Instead of it sounding like a foreign language to you, it will have some meaning after one attends this session.

These workshops will be held at 209 Bisbee Rd., in Bisbee. Nov. 25. You may sign up for one or both sessions. Pre registration is required by calling 1-877-365-7220 (toll free) or 520-324-3150.

Blood drive in Willcox Thursday

The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give Blood. Willcox Community Blood Drive will be held at the United Methodist Church, located at 127 Curtis Avenue, on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

TOPS Walk with Willcox Saturday

The Willcox Chapter of TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, will be hosting its third annual fitness walk, "Walk With Willcox", Saturday, Nov. 15, in Keiller Park. Anyone who would like to find out more about the local or national organization is invited to attend.

Beginning at 9 a.m., there will be a short presentation by area captain, Markie Crossman, from Sierra Vista. Following, we will be walking and sharing with other TOPS members from throughout Cochise County. Everyone who has been wondering about TOPS or thinking about joining is invited to bring a lunch, a lawn chair, the family, and join the fun.

The holiday season will soon be upon us. For those who have lost a loved one, it can be a particularly difficult time when surrounded by messages to be merry and joyful. Hospice is offering two Holiday Grief Support Groups that are FREE of charge. We will share ideas on surviving the holidays and continuing your healing. Knowing that you are not alone can lighten your load and sharing with others can bring comfort. Anyone who has had a loved one die is welcome. Come join us in remembering and honoring those loved ones.

  • Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 3:45-5:15 p.m.

  • Monday, Dec. 15 from 3:45-5:15 p.m.

    Both will be at the Charles W. Leighton, Jr. Hospice Office, 524 W. Maley Place in Willcox.

    You do not need to call to attend and you can come to one or both groups.

    Auction items for benefit sought

    Items are being sought for a silent auction to benefit the Leach family following an acccident that killed 14-year-old Christina and injured her parents Nick and Sharma and brother Dwaine. Please call Irene Allaire at 520-507-9096 if you have an item and she will make arrangements to pick it up.

    The benefit will be at the Elks Lodge on Nov. 22 with dinner at 6 p.m., silent auction from 7-9:30 p.m. and dance to the band, Straight Ahead, after dinner.

    Tickets are $25 for dinner/dance and $15 for dance. Tickets available at Ace (See Brenda) or Willcox Livestock Auction (see Barbara).

    Photographers workshop today

    Willcox Area Photographers will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the SSVEC Boardroom at 350 N. Haskell Ave.

    Larry Scott (Kestrel Graphic Design) of Benson will share some of his photographic and graphic design examples and explain how he uses Photoshop to create short publications and ads for clients.

    Anyone interested in improving photographic skills in invited to attend.

    Assistance for Medicare benefits

    Open enrollment for the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits begins Saturday, Nov. 15, and many seniors need assistance in understanding the choices they will have. There will be 49 prescription drug plans available in Arizona in 2009. The only way to compare these plans is to use the Medicare Plan Finder on the www.medicare.gov Web site.

    In order to assist seniors, enrollment events are being sponsored by the SEAGO Area Agency on Aging. Grace Murcio, Medicare Counselor, will be on hand to explain Medicare benefits and answer individual's questions, and take applications from low-income individuals who need assistance in paying their Part D premiums. Come prepared with a complete list of medications and dosages.

    LCO-Beta Holiday House Nov. 21

    LCO 29th Annual Holiday House will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, in Willcox. Handmade gifts, baked goods, raffles and door prizes. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children.

    Salvation Army bell ringers needed

    The Willcox Salvation Army is asking for bell ringer volunteers to assist with holiday kettle collections. The Willcox chapter of the Salvation Army is self-funded through donations provided from individuals and businesses within our community. During the holiday season and winter months, the Salvation Army is called upon the most to assist those in need. The donations received through our holiday kettles are critical in providing emergency assistance people in need.

    If you would like to volunteer for the Salvation Army, please contact Penney Bell at (520) 766-4231. This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, organizations and local groups to give something very valuable to your community... your time.

    Choir Concert is Monday at WHS

    The Willcox High School Choir and Message Theater Concert will be held on Monday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the WHS auditorium. It is produced by instructors Gary Hatch and Linda Nolan. The public is invited to the free concert!
