On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Willcox hosted its first Cross Country meet of the 2008 season. Seven schools participated: Academy of Tucson, Benson, Bowie-San Simon, Thatcher, Tombstone, Valley Union, and Willcox. The weather was warm and sunny with a welcome breeze. Seventy-four athletes ran in two races.

The girls' competition was won by Tombstone with 19 points; Thatcher was the runner-up with 29. Willcox, Benson, and Valley Union did not have the required five runners and therefore did not score team points.

The girls' individual winner was Alesha Jones of Willcox, with a time of 27:31 over the 3.1 mile Yucca Sierra Course on the Coronado Winery property. Second place went to Katie Young of Tombstone at 28:12. Willcox had three other runners: Samantha Miller 23rd, 39:48; Kassy Cawood 24th, 40:05; and Roxanne McInnes, 25th, 41:18.

In the boys' team competition, Tombstone was first with 31 points; Benson was second with 41. Willcox was third at 75. Valley Union was 4th, 97; Thatcher 5th, 110; and Academy of Tucson and Bowie-San Simon did not have full teams.

The boys' individual winner was Cody Rosengarten of Tombstone. Cody is the 2007 Willcox Invitational Champion. His time Tuesday was 19:27, 9 seconds slower than his winning time last year. Coach Mike Nelson expects Cody to beat his Invitational time in two weeks when Willcox hosts its 30th Annual Cross Country Invitational. Second place went to Forrest Swift of Benson at 20:50. Willcox's team was lead by Stephen Addington who finished 5th at 22:24. Stephen beat his best time from last year by 27 seconds.

Willcox's Dustin Seney was 14th, 24:57; Tony Vasquez 15th, 25:00; Derek Wolslagel 22nd, 27:45; Jeff Seney 34th, 29:32; Mason Davis 36th, 29:45; Dillon Bonner 39th, 34:10; Alver Stone 41st, 42:33; and Pepe Rivera 42nd, 42:37.

The races were well attended by parents, friends, and spectators. In two weeks (Oct. 8), the Willcox Invitational will host 15 to 20 schools, 150 to 200 runners, in three races beginning at 3 p.m. at the Yucca Sierra Course on the Coronado Winery property. Everyone is invited to watch some of the best young runners in Southern Arizona race over the 3.1 mile course.
