Nominate favorite son/daughter
Nominations for Willcox's Favorite Son/Daughter awards are due Sept. 5
Willcox's favorite in-town and out-of-town son/daughter awards will once again be presented at the Willcox Cowboy Hall of Fame banquet at the start of Rex Allen Days, Thursday, Oct. 2.
Nomination forms may be picked up at the Arizona Range News and then returned no later than Friday, Sept. 5.
In-town favorite son/daughter award is given by NCCH to a man or woman who meets two or more of the following qualifications:
1) Was born in Willcox
2) Graduated from the eighth grade in Willcox
3) Attended school in Willcox for majority of elementary/high school
4) Graduated from high school in Willcox
And:
€ Has consistently lived in Willcox
€ Is a Willcox supporter and promoter
€ Has made a difference in the lives of people in Willcox
€ Attained recognition outside of Willcox
The out-of-town favorite son/daughter award is given by the Arizona Range News to a man or woman who meets the following qualifications:
€ Was born in Willcox, or
€ Spent the majority of his/her growing up years in Willcox
€ Attended or graduated from high school in Willcox
€ Considers Willcox his/her "hometown"
€ Is a Willcox supporter and promoter
€ Has made a difference in people's lives
€ Attained recognition in his/her life's occupation/location.
Apple Harvest
Celebration
Make plans this Labor Day weekend to bring the family and friends to join in the fun at Apple Annie's 8th Annual Apple Harvest Celebration. Whether you would like to "labor" in the orchards picking your own or choose from the abundant selection of the already picked apples, you are sure to enjoy the homegrown freshness.
The Celebration will run Aug. 30-Sept. 1, starting each day with an "All-You-Can-Eat" pancake with fried apple topping breakfast, served 7 -10:30 a.m. each morning, followed by Apple Annie's famous "Apple-Smoked" burger lunches, served 11 a.m.-4 p.m. each day of the celebration. Homemade apple pie ice cream will be churning and there will be free wagon rides to the orchards to pick apples and Asian pears. As always parking and admission are free.

USDA commodities at Methodist Church
USDA Commodities will be distributed on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the United Methodist Church patio (located at 124 S. Curtis Ave., Willcox) from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, contact Nell at 520-384-3388 (at the Willcox Food Pantry). Bring an ID with your Cochise County address on it.
Rainbow Girls
membership event
Willcox Assembly #7 of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls would like to invite girls of all ages and their parents to a membership drive and service project on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Rex Allen Theater.
Please join us for an informative fun-filled event starting with a movie and ending with a hamburger and hotdog cookout in Railroad Park. Proceeds from the cookout will benefit the Charles W. Leighton Hospice.
Membership event and movie are free, so daughters bring you parents and learn what Rainbow has to offer you.
Dance/auction benefit for Jasmine Guillen
The Elks Lodge and Mix-it-Mobile DJ are hosting a Benefit dance and live auction, with the proceeds going for the benefit of Jasmine Guillen, the 14-year-old Willcox girl who was stricken with encephalitis in early June. The event will be held at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 6-11 p.m.
Jasmine has been released from Children's Hospital in Phoenix but will need extensive therapy before she will be able to return to normal activities and to what was to be her first year of high school.
A 2000, two-door, red Camaro will be one of the items on the block for this fund raiser as well as a Fender Electric guitar donated by Mark and Jessica Breen, several pieces of excellent quality jewelry from a wholesale jeweler, fine gemstones, a few pieces of antique furniture and a lot of other items, too numerous to mention.
Admission to this event is $5 for adults and $3 for teens. Twelve and under are free.
Volunteer Fair set for Sept. 6 in Willcox
A Volunteer Fair, hosted by Cochise County Network, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Willcox United Methodist Church, 124 S. Curtis Ave.
Have you ever thought about becoming a volunteer in your community? You can make a difference. There are many volunteer programs available. Learn about special programs in your community that are working together to change lives and make our community a better place for all of us to live.
The Volunteer Fair will host a variety of organizations who serve our community through volunteer support, as well as other agencies in Cochise County who provide assistance to individuals and families.

"Mass Media and Society" presentation
Dr. John Craft, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communications at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, will be hosting a presentation, "Mass Media and Society", at the Elsie S Hogan Community Library on Friday, Aug. 29, at 5 p.m. This program is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Arizona Humanities Council.
Dr. Craft will examine the role that the media is expected to play in our democratic society, and specific incidents of success and failure. Controversial media problems, which happen with some regularity and are well known, will serve as the fodder for discussion.
This will be most insightful for those wanting to learn more about the media and for those interested in the Journalism field of work. Everyone is welcome. We will have light snacks afterwards and a chance to meet Dr. Craft.

NCHS board meeting changed to Sept. 3
Notice to public: Northern Cochise Health System's scheduled board meeting for Aug. 27, 2008 has been postponed until Sept. 3, 2008. This rescheduled meeting will be held in the Hospital West Wing at 5 p.m.
Rex Allen Days queen entries due Sept. 20
The great queen pursuit begins! We are looking for young women to compete for the title of Rex Allen Days Rodeo Queen of 2008.
If you are between the ages of 16-22, live in Cochise County, have never been married, know how to ride, and are interested in representing your community during Rex Allen Days through 2009, contact Queen Chairman, Linda Tunks at 520-256-1571.
Hurry, deadline for entries is Sept. 20.

Mexican dinner and mariachi music Sept. 6
You are invited to a night out on the town at the Willcox Elks Club, brought to you by the City of Willcox Parks and Recreation.
A No host bar opens at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.
For senior citizens and guests, a Mexican food dinner and entertainment by "Los Changitos Feos", an award winning, Tucson-based youth mariachi group started in 1964.
Tickets are $10 for age 55 and up, and $15 for guests under 55.

A planning meeting to coordinate a community Halloween event in Keiller Park will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, at noon in the Justice of the Peace courtroom. Anyone wanting to get involved is welcome.
