Harry "Sonny" Davis
1932-2008
Harry "Sonny" Davis, 75 passed away in his home on July 25, 2008. Willcox was his home for 50 years. Sonny was born in Phoenix on Aug. 26, 1932. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was honorably discharged. Sonny has worked cattle from Cochise County to the Grand Canyon. His career as a cowboy began at age fourteen when he went to work for the Ten X Cattle Company located just south of the Grand Canyon. For the next 60 years Sonny has been riding colts, working cattle, shoeing horses, team roping, riding bulls, and he has even cobbled a few shoes. Sonny has worked for a lot of different outfits, and at each ranch Sonny was usually hired to ride the colts. It was in the late 1950s when Sonny and his wife Faye were hired by Dan Lowery to take one of the camps on the Three Links Ranch west of Willcox. They lived at a camp called Deep Well. In 1960, Sonny went to work for Jack Nelson at the Willcox Livestock Auction. For twenty years Sonny worked at the sale barn and took care of Bob Ogden's ranch. Sonny also worked for Tom Sellman. Sonny said, "Tom had cattle scattered from Elfrida to Bonita; if there was a pasture anywhere with a blade of grass Tom had it leased". Through Sonny's life it didn't matter if he was working on a ranch, a livestock auction, a feed lot, a saddle shop, or even at the Johnson Mine, he was always riding colts, shoeing horses and team roping on the side. Sonny is survived by his wife Faye, at their home; his children; Glenda (Calvin), Rhea (Gary), Kenny (Lynn), Terry Faye (Kenny) and Sam (Julie). Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 at Westlawn Chapel. Contributions may be made in Sonny's name to the Charles Wm Leighton Jr. Hospice, P.O. Box 115, Willcox, Ariz. 85644. Services under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox, Ariz.
