Counterfeit $50 and $100 bills being circulated in Willcox: Learn to detect them

Published: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:25 PM CDT
The Willcox Police Department has received reports of counterfeit $50 and $100 bills being used in our community. These bills are decent copies and can be difficult to detect just by feeling and looking at them, they have not been detectable by using a counterfeit pen.

Serial numbers on some of the bills are:

DA 0704414 A

FL 95301662 B

It is likely that there are other serial numbers as well.

The bills found in Willcox have paper that is slightly tan, and inks using shades of black and green, making them difficult to detect without looking closely. However there are some mistakes that can alert you and your employees if you take just a moment to look for them.

€ The Federal Reserve seal on the left side of the counterfeit bills has an eagle that is all black. On the real seal, there are clear lines within its wings, and you can see the eagle's eye and talons on its feet.

€ There is a thin strip within the bill that has "USA" and the denomination on it under the Federal Reserve seal to the left side of the bill that you can only see if you hold the bill up to a light. The counterfeit $50 bill was missing the strip, and the $100 bill incorrectly has "FIVE" printed on its strip.

€ On the right side of both counterfeit bills, when held up to a light, there is a watermark showing the face of President Lincoln. On real bills, the face watermark on the right side of the bill should match the face of the President that is displayed in the center of the bill.

€ You cannot feel the lines on Benjamin Franklin's coat with your fingernail on the counterfeit $100 bill, as you would be able to with a real bill.

Please notify your employees of the fake bills and inform them of what to look for. If you believe you have received counterfeit money, please call the Willcox Police Department at 520-384-4673.
