In Our View: Entertained public may help pay for fireworks

Published: Wednesday, July 9, 2008 12:47 PM CDT
July 4 just wouldn't be the same without fireworks. There's something about the brilliant flashes of color and the smell of black powder in the air that puts a fitting finish on the day.

That was certainly the case this year with the Willcox fireworks. As the day drew near, the city fireworks fund was about $4,000 short. But the fire department was determined that the show would go on. And so was the city. The city covered the insurance premium for the event, so that the deficit was less. But the fire department desperately needed donations.

Willcox is a unique city in that when there is a problem, and people need to pull together, they do. It happened with the Toggery. When the brick wall on the exterior began to disintegrate, the historical society needed thousands of dollars to rebuild it and save one of the oldest extant buildings in town. Kathy Klump didn't know where the money was coming from and a condemnation of the building by the city was looming.

But in true Willcox form, people donated material, time, expertise and money. The city held off on the condemnation, and working together, the citizens of Willcox got the building fixed and saved.

The fireworks were another challenge. By the time July 4 rolled around, the deficit was down to about $1,200. The weather cooperated and allowed a truly remarkable show to go on. The stands were packed as a fireworks spectacular lasting nearly two hours went off as planned. Clearly everyone had a great time, especially the kids in the audience.

But now we're back to reality, and the fire department still needs donations to cover the deficit. Whatever you can spare would be appreciated. And businesses, if you can donate something, please consider it. The Range News will prime the pump with a $100 donation. Make donations payable to the Willcox Fire Department Fireworks Fund, 151 W. Maley St., Willcox, Az., 85643. Let's get this deficit cleaned up.

If more donations are received than are needed to clean up the deficit, Assistant Fire Chief Patti Ackerson-Rodriquez says the excess will be used to start the 2009 fireworks fund. Let's pull together and once again do what Willcox does better than any other town in the area: We make things happen for our community.
