An 18-year-old Willcox man remains in a coma after a single vehicle rollover last Friday afternoon.

Jarreth Cohorn sustained four minor spinal fractures, one major vertebrae fracture, and severe brain trauma, his father Jeff Cohorn said in an e-mail to the Range News Sunday.

"Early Friday afternoon (May 23), Jarreth lost control of his car. The car flipped end over end and he was ejected. He was not wearing his seat belt!" he said.

"Due to severe brain shearing, Jarreth was in a drug-induced coma for five days to get the brain swelling under controllable conditions. He is now off the ventilator and all sedative, but still remains in a minor coma," Jeff said.

"Doctors assure us that he will wake up within the next two weeks. Then they can accurately assess the damage and the rehabilitation that needs to be done."

Jarreth's cousin, Brett Cohorn, called 911 at about 12:46 p.m. on Friday, May 23 about the accident on Moonlight Road, east of Martin Ranch Road, according to a report from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival on scene, deputies found Cohorn's silver 2003 four-door Mitsubishi on the Southside of the road, with major damage to the hood, roof, and driver and passenger side panels and doors.

Cohorn was found lying about 60 feet from the vehicle. His passenger, 15-year-old Tyler Price, was found five feet from the car, holding his right arm, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Cohorn was flown by helicopter to University Medical Center in Tucson.

Price was transported to Northern Cochise Health Systems in Willcox for treatment.

Witnesses traveling about 1/4 mile behind Cohorn told deputies he was driving about 70 to 75 miles per hour, when he hit a bump in the road and rolled end over end four times.

Deputies interviewed Price, who said he did not know how fast they were going, but that they hit a bump in the road, caught air, and then went through a barbed wire fence, Capas said.

Cohorn had not been wearing a seat belt, but there was no information on Price's seatbelt, she said.

There is no indication of alcohol being involved, Capas said. Weather conditions at the time of the accident were partly cloudy with light showers and a wet road.

The accident remains under investigation.

"The family would like to thank the Willcox EMS and the LifeFlight crew for their efforts," Jeff said Sunday. "We would also like to thank all those that have prayed for Jarreth. Please wear your seatbelt and keep praying for our son."

A benefit account has been set up for Jarreth Cohorn at Cochise Credit Union, 170 N. Haskell Ave., Willcox.
