Memorial Day ceremony to be held at Sunset Cemetery

Published: Wednesday, May 21, 2008 11:08 AM CDT
The Veterans of Foreign Wars in Willcox will have a brief ceremony Monday at 7 a.m. in the Willcox Sunset Cemetery before placing flags on the graves of veterans. The American Legion Tenley-Lopez Post 20 will help place flags, said Earl Humphries, commander.

For Flay Day, the American Legion Tenley-Lopez Post 20 will hold at Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Willcox Elks Lodge, said member Bonnie Barton.

Flag Retirement Ceremonies are held on Sundays, so the ceremony will be the Sunday closest to Flag Day, on June 15, Humphries said.

"I will be collecting flags that need retirement," Barton said. "Call me at 384-4495."

Humphries said Legion members will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets at grocery stores to raise money for a scholarship for Boys State.

The Post gave out scholarships for the first time this year, Humphries said. Two $500 scholarships went to Merel Rodenburg and Kim Crawford.

As a second year member and first year as commander, Humphries said he is still learning a lot, but hopes to increase involvement with the Post by current or past service members.

Members of Post 20 will also be selling poppies in November for Veterans Day, Humphries said.

Poppy Day is a memorial to American war dead and a tribute to disabled servicemen originated after the First World War. The American Legion Auxiliary reports that wearing a poppy on Poppy Day will honor the more than half-million Americans who died and the nearly one million wounded during both of the World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict and the recent conflicts. Poppy Day, an annual memorial to the war dead and the disabled veteran, is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. By wearing a poppy on Poppy Day each American can honor the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women while assisting the living.

The first national Poppy Day in the United States was held in 1921.

In 1920 at the American Legion National Convention in Cleveland Ohio the National Organization adopted the poppy as its memorial flower and the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as it Memorial Flower at their first convention in Kansas City, MO in 1921. After taking this action they pledged that 100 per cent of the Poppy Day contributions would go to welfare work for servicemen and women and members of their families. Children of the war veterans left in need by the disability of their parent benefit directly from the Poppy Day. Contributions received from Poppy Day go directly into rehabilitation and child welfare programs of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The first Poppies following World War I were made of silk by French widows and war orphans. But Poppy manufacturing was soon turned over to disabled veterans in this country. Hospitalized U.S. Veterans in Minnesota produced the first memorial poppies made in this country in 1922. The red crepe paper memorial poppies worn today are made by veterans in hospitals and workshops in 40 states. These disabled servicemen are paid for each hand-made poppy they make. The materials are furnished free by the American Legion Auxiliary in the states where the hospitals are located.

On Poppy Day more than 25 million poppies are distributed throughout the country under the supervision of the American Legion Auxiliary.
