One incumbent and two new faces were elected to the Willcox City Council at the March 11 primary, according to unofficial election results.
Incumbent Mayor Elwood "Woody" Johnson was the top vote getter, followed closely by newcomer Stephen Klump, and coming in third was another newcomer, Chris Donahue.
"I'm pleased with the results," said Donahue, who, along with Johnson, was awaiting the results at the polling place last Tuesday evening.
"I'm just glad people did show up to vote. I am glad for the vote of confidence by the people," Johnson told the Range News. "I look for another four years of exciting things to happen in Willcox."
"I want to thank everyone who voted for me and everyone who got out to vote that day," Klump said after Monday night's council meeting.
Incumbent Vice Mayor Phillip Rodriguez and Don Bardella failed to receive enough votes to proceed to a runoff election.
"I'm happy for the four years I gave," Rodriguez told the Range News Monday night. "I think the council has changed and is more united. The budget has looked better than it has in the last 10 years. I hope to come back and work for the people again."
"I want to thank the people who did vote for me - I appreciate it," he added.
City Council will canvass the vote at a special meeting scheduled for Monday, March 24, at a time and location to be announced.
According to the Cochise County website, the final vote count is as follows:
Donald Bardella 29
Christopher Donahue 164
Elwood Johnson 189
Stephen Klump 187
Philip Rodriguez 115
These results consist of all early ballots and ballots cast at the polls which have been submitted by the City of Willcox, according to the Cochise County website. These results are subject to change pending verification of provisional ballots.
Of the 60 early ballots issued, 51 were returned; City Clerk Cristy Whelan said last Tuesday night.
The total votes cast at the polls were 225, she said.
The county recorder's office said last week that there are 1,476 registered voters in Willcox.
