BOWIE

A FREE DUMPING DAY will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 to kick off Bowie's Community Clean Up Campaign.

The transfer station will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with areas for tires, batteries, appliances, hazardous chemicals and metal.

The Chamber of Commerce will be announcing more dates and events in this campaign.


ELFRIDA

A CCIPRA MEETING (Cochise County Individual and Property Rights Association) will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday Feb.10, in Elfrida. Charles Flanagan, candidate for Supervisor, District 2, will speak.

The meeting will be at the Elfrida Community Center on Highway 191 (green building south of the health center). Meetings are open to everybody.

Come to the meeting, bring friends and neighbors, ask Charles questions and tell him your concerns, and begin to decide who you want as Supervisor in 2008.

WHITEWATER DRAW BIRDING TRIP: The Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning is now taking registrations for an educational field trip to Whitewater Draw on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Located in the Sulphur Springs Valley, Whitewater Draw attracts thousands of migrating Sandhill cranes each winter. Tom Wood of the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) is a world-renowned expert on birds living in and traveling through Cochise County, a top birding destination. Wood will share his expertise and take participants to viewing stations where the magnificent birds can be seen by the thousands along with other wildlife.

Cost of the guided trip, which departs from the Douglas Campus in a carpool, is $20. Participants should bring their own vehicles, as well as a picnic lunch and water. The group will leave at 8 a.m. and return at 3 p.m.

Wood also will conduct a free, one-hour lecture about the cranes and other winter species at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Room 313 on the Sierra Vista Campus.

SAN SIMON

THE 2008 SAN SIMON SCHOOL SPELLING BEE winner is Cory Sprott. The runner-up is Zane Webster. Both students are in the 7th grade at San Simon School. This is the second consecutive year that Cory will represent San Simon School at the Cochise County Spelling Bee to be held at Buena High School in Sierra Vista on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The winner of the county bee will advance to the Arizona State Spelling Bee on March 29.

Other contestants representing each grade in the San Simon School Spelling Bee included Haley Bender and Jake Webster from third grade; Marissa Hillebert, Ryan Adame and Justin Nguyen from fourth grade; Kayle Skiles and Spencer Donaldson from fifth grade; JD Cranford and Henry Bender from 6th grade; and in addition to Cory Sprott and Zane Webster, Bertha Ruiz represented the seventh grade.

COCHISE COUNTY

TWO DOGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION: Blue Bear and Smokey: Ten-year-old Yorkie brothers (neutered) who have lived together their whole lives. They would love to stay together, in a new home, but they can be separated. "Bear" is the biggest of the two, he is around 13 pounds. He is silvery/blue in color. Smokey is dark black with rusty tan.
