Hospital tax levy will continue

District voters have spoken and the tax levy supporting the hospital will continue.

"I was glad to see the tax pass," Chris Cronberg, CEO of Northern Cochise Community Hospital, said Tuesday night. "I was really happy to see the margin. This is the third time I've been through the reauthorization, and it's the highest percentage we've had -- 85 percent said yes. Unfortunately, we've had another low turnout (nearly 10 percent). It's not a primary or a general, so we got a small turnout."

Every five years, the hospital district must ask the voters' permission to continue to levy a secondary property tax to support the hospital.

District voters also elected those who set the amount collected by the secondary tax. Unofficially elected were Dr. Raymond D. Scott, Shirley Shotton and Carol J. Dunagan. See votes received at right.

Five candidates were vying for three seats on the board of directors for the hospital district. Unsuccessful candidates were Lineva Donahue and incumbent Jimmy C Reed.

"We always look forward to new thinking on the board," Cronberg said. "We welcome them getting to know us, and bringing new ideas to the board."

"Jimmy has served on the board as long as I've been here," he added. "We're going to miss him. I look forward to working with the new ones."

This year's election came on the heels of a controversial decision by the hospital's board of directors to close the nursing home in July. Board chairman Pat Stark plans to re-visit the issue at its meeting on Tuesday, March 27.

Cronberg said the results did not seem to indicate that the election was impacted by the nursing home decision.
