The Elsie S. Hogan Library is starting over with a brand new library commission, after all five commissioners resigned in September.

The Willcox City Council voted unanimously last Monday night to appoint Rebecca L. Dyorich, Dela J. Aiman, Judy Leighton, and Michael B. Shell to the advisory board.

"All are qualified electors of the city," Tom Miner, director of the Elsie S. Hogan Library told the council.

"One position remains vacant, but we will continue to seek a fifth qualified applicant, for a term expiring June 30, 2008," he said.

Former Commissioners Ruth Jensen, Maureen Hudson, Ann Mooney, and Vicky Long submitted a group resignation letter during call to the public at the Sept. 18 council meeting.

The remaining commissioner, Terry Rowden, submitted her resignation on Thursday, Sept. 21.

"We had concerns about communication and the role of the commission," Hudson told the Range News at the time. Other commissioners contacted declined to comment for the paper. However, a letter submitted to council by the commissioners indicated that Miner's management style was a key reason for the resignations.

"They all expressed interest in serving on the library's advisory board, they all have their own set of expertise, and they all pretty much understand what the role of an advisory board is," City Manager Mike Leighton said about the new candidates prior to the vote. "I'm very pleased that they stepped up to do that."

The terms of Dyorich and Aiman will expire June 30, 2008, while those of Judy Leighton and Shell will expire June 30, 2010.

"Since moving here in 1999, I have found the library to be a very good one," Aiman said in her application letter. "Not only in types of and the number of books, but also in the fact that there are computers for all of us to use."

"I certainly appreciate the different reading and movie programs going on at the library for all age groups," she added.

Aiman has also volunteered "at both museums, at the hospital on the Women's Auxiliary, also at the Friends of the Library."

"My education consists of three years of college, many years raising my six children, working in retail and the management field," Aiman said.

In her letter of application, Dyorich said, "My family has lived in Willcox for 10 wonderful years."

"We have been frequent patrons of the library and have enjoyed many of the services offered there," she added. "I would like the opportunity to contribute to the efforts of all those who make the Elsie S. Hogan Community Library excellent."

Judy Leighton is the wife of Mike Leighton, who has been city manager since August.

"I have only been in the community for a short period of time; however I have been actively involved with several organizations. I have served on committees for Friends of the Library in other communities," she said. "I feel the library is important to the City of Willcox, and I would be proud to assist in its growth and expansion."

Her education consists of a B.S. degree in Human Resources Management, a paralegal certificate, and completion of Nursing Home Administrator's training and licensing, said Leighton, adding that she has researched and written several grants for various organizations.
