Family fight leads to 'attempted murder'
By Carol Broeder/Range News
A family fight in Sunsites carried over into the city last Monday night when it was feared the subject had fled to a Willcox hotel.
Gary Lee Tucker, 23, of Pearce, was charged with attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of criminal damage, and disorderly conduct, misdemeanor failure to appear on a warrant, refusing to surrender line for an emergency, and preventing the use of a telephone in an emergency.
Before Tucker's arrest in Sunsites early Tuesday morning, the Willcox Police Department had received a call at about 10:36 p.m. that Tucker might have headed to the Best Western Plaza Inn on Rex Allen Drive, said Jake Weaver, the city's chief of police.
Officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) thought they had seen the vehicle driven by another subject who had picked him up.
Willcox police secured the perimeter of the hotel and conducted a room-to-room search that night, Weaver said.
The Cochise County Swat Team provided assistance, but Tucker was not found in the Willcox area.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Department had received the call at 9:34 p.m. that Tucker had gotten into a property dispute with his parents.
After the argument, according to Carol Capas of the Cochise County Sheriff's Department, Tucker allegedly got into his truck and used it to ram their mobile home and some vehicles on the property.
Tucker then drove his truck toward his father, Leroy, pinning him against another vehicle and causing him injury, Capas said.
Despite a leg injury, the father escaped. He went into his house to get a shotgun "to detain Tucker until deputies arrived," she said.
His father fired a shot through the window of the truck, but Tucker continued to ram his parent's mobile home, damaging the patio cover and "jarring the entire mobile home," Capas said.
Tucker finally got out of the truck, which he could no longer drive.
His father told him to stay put and fired a warning shot into the ground. He later told deputies that he believed he might have wounded his son in the foot.
Tucker ran to another part of the property.
His parents saw him get into a car with a female subject, and leave the scene.
The sheriff's department received a call at 4:49 a.m. Tuesday morning, when his parents reported that Tucker was back on their property.
He was found and arrested at Central and Treasure Road in Sunsites.
Tucker had minor cuts and abrasions on his face caused by birdshot, Capas said.
He is currently in custody on a $25,000 bond, set by Cochise County Superior Court Judge James Conlogue, a court official said.
Tucker's arraignment is scheduled for Monday, July 3, after a June 27 preliminary hearing.
