Building code changes approved
By CAROL BROEDER/Arizona Range News
The Willcox City Council unanimously approved changes to the municipal building codes at its Feb. 6 meeting.
The city has adopted the "International Building Code 2003 Edition" and the "2005 Edition National Electric Code," making the appropriate revisions to city codes.
There were no comments from the public during the hearing held at the Feb. 6 City Council meeting.
Responding to questions from Councilmen Woody Johnson and Jimmy Norris, David Bonner, the city's administrator of development services, said, "The county around us currently has the international codes. There are things in our codes that are literally word for word with the international codes."
"What it all comes down to is the safety and security of our citizens," he added.
Bonner told City Council last month that the city "needs to update the building codes to take advantage of newer technology and create an environment that outside developers are familiar with, due to the fact that many other municipalities have adopted the international codes."
The new ordinance includes new building and construction, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, fire, and electric codes.
The plumbing section of the code had been tabled at the Jan. 17 for further review by city staff, as it conflicts with current state requirements.
