Arizona Range News wins 11 state awards

The Arizona Range News staff won 11 awards, including first in Arizona for individual photography, headlines and for its website at the Arizona Newspapers Association's Better Newspapers Contest.
The Arizona Range News competed with same-size weekly newspapers statewide for a variety of awards, which were presented Saturday in Scottsdale.
Associate Editor Ainslee S. Wittig almost swept the Best News Photograph category by placing both first and third with her photos of the aftermath of last July's straight-line windstorm in Willcox.
The editorial staff also received first place in Best Headline, for headlines written throughout the year.
The newspaper's website, www.willcoxrangenews.com, received a first-place award, thanks to contributions from the editorial and advertising staff and technical support from Amanda Jennings.
The newspaper also received second-place in Community Service and Journalistic Achievement, for a series written by reporter Carol Broeder on rate increases and policy changes at the city's cemetery.
The Range News also received second place in Editorial Page Excellence, and third place in Departmental News and Copy Editing Excellence.
The newspaper also received a third-place award in Special Sections for its 2003 Willcox Community Profile.
Steve Reno received second-place in Best Sports Story for his article on the reunion of the Willcox High School Class of 1979 basketball team.
Broeder was awarded second-place in Best Sustained Coverage or Series, for a series on the city's water tank break-in.
Honorable mention went to Wittig in Best Lifestyle Feature Story, for her story on Karoo Genetics in Willcox.
